I had the opportunity to volunteer with IVHQ in Guatemala. I recommend the program for the opportunity to meet like minded individuals traveling and volunteering as well.

IVHQ offers several locations to volunteer; however, it is important to understand that IVHQ, based in New Zealand, partners with local organizations in various countries and places volunteers with those organizations.
In my case, I signed up to the Guatemala volunteer project with IVHQ. IVHQ placed me with Maximo Nivel, a local volunteer, organization in Antigua Guatemala. It is possible to volunteer directly with Maximo Nivel but at the time of my placement the cost was better through IVHQ and I did not know about Maximo Nivel.
When choosing to volunteer abroad, consider organizations that offer fair costs, reliability, computer labs and the ones that requires health/travel insurance and background checks.
I also love that Spanish classes are offered at very reasonable costs. The classes are small and intense.
I would choose IVHQ again for other programs in other countries. My experience with Maximo Nivel in Guatemala was safe and positive.
My host family provided home cooked meals!! Guatemalan Food!!
A trip to Pacaya Mountain is definitely worth the early morning wake up. It’s likes walking along the clouds on the way down. Don’t forget your flashlight!!
I loved the service and the adventure!
